Choosing the Right Container for Your Project
Picking the wrong dumpster size is one of the most avoidable mistakes made on job sites. Too small, and a second haul is needed. Too large, and money is wasted on unused cubic yards.
At Camarato Disposal, we’ve been matching containers to projects across Ocean, Monmouth, Mercer, and Middlesex County since 1998. This guide was put together to make that decision easier for you.
What Does “Yard” Actually Mean?
Each dumpster size is measured in cubic yards. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet of material. That’s roughly the size of a standard washing machine.
So when a 20-yard container is referenced, 20 washing machines’ worth of debris can be loaded into it. That mental image tends to make size decisions much clearer.
Dumpster Sizes Available at Camarato Disposal
Five sizes are offered through our roll-off dumpster rental services. Each is suited to a different category of project.
10-Yard Dumpster Small cleanouts are handled well by the 10-yard. Roughly three pickup truck loads of material can be loaded. Bathroom remodels, garage cleanouts, and single-room renovations in Toms River or Point Pleasant are typical uses. Placement is easy on tight driveways.
15-Yard Dumpster The 15-yard sits between the 10 and 20, and it’s frequently the right choice for jobs that feel too big for one and too small for the other. Attic cleanouts, small deck removals, and light roofing jobs across Ocean and Monmouth County tend to fit well here.
20-Yard Dumpster This is the most commonly rented size. Approximately six pickup truck loads are accommodated. Kitchen renovations, multi-room cleanouts, flooring replacements, and mid-size yard cleanups are well suited to the 20-yard. It’s a common choice for homeowners in Brick, Freehold, and Lakewood.
30-Yard Dumpster Larger renovation projects and new construction debris are handled by the 30-yard. Nine pickup truck loads of material are accommodated. Full home remodels, additions, and commercial buildouts in Hamilton Township or Edison regularly require this size.
40-Yard Dumpster The largest container available. Major demolition projects, large construction sites, and multi-unit cleanouts across Middlesex and Mercer County are handled by the 40-yard. Approximately twelve pickup truck loads of material can be loaded.
Quick Project-to-Size Reference
| Project Type | Recommended Size |
|---|---|
| Single room cleanout | 10-yard |
| Bathroom remodel | 10 or 15-yard |
| Attic or basement cleanout | 15 or 20-yard |
| Roofing job (average home) | 15 or 20-yard |
| Kitchen remodel | 20-yard |
| Deck removal | 15 or 20-yard |
| Full home renovation | 30-yard |
| New construction debris | 30 or 40-yard |
| Storm cleanup (post-nor’easter) | 20 or 30-yard |
| Commercial buildout | 30 or 40-yard |
| Full demolition project | 40-yard |
When in doubt, move up a size. Paying for a bit of extra capacity is less costly than a second haul.
Weight Matters as Much as Volume
Volume and weight are two separate measurements. A 20-yard container filled with concrete weighs far more than one filled with drywall scraps. Weight limits are applied per container, and overages carry additional charges.
Heavy materials — concrete, brick, asphalt, tile, and soil — require a different conversation than a typical household cleanout. When a project involves dense debris, our team should be told upfront. Weight is factored in, not just cubic footage, and the right container is recommended accordingly.
This is especially important for contractors working on Ocean County slab work or Shore-area foundation projects, where concrete volume can add up fast.

Placement and Space in Your Area
Properties across the Jersey Shore often come with narrow driveways, small lots, and restricted street access. Beach communities like Bay Head, Seaside Heights, and Beachwood, as well as nearby areas like Asbury Park that rely on affordable local dumpster rental solutions, present unique placement challenges that aren’t seen on larger inland lots in Middlesex or Mercer County.
Before delivery, a few things should be considered. Clearance overhead is needed — low-hanging wires or tree branches can prevent safe placement. The surface should be stable; soft ground or freshly paved asphalt can be damaged by a loaded container. And if the dumpster needs to sit on a public street or sidewalk in municipalities like Toms River or Brick, a permit may be required from the local municipality.
Camarato Disposal is familiar with local placement requirements throughout our four-county service area, backed by customer feedback highlighting our reliable service. Questions about your specific property are welcomed before delivery is scheduled.
What Can and Can’t Be Loaded
Most construction debris, household junk, yard waste, and renovation materials are accepted. Certain materials are restricted. Hazardous waste, paints, chemicals, tires, and appliances containing refrigerants are among the items that cannot be placed in a roll-off container.
A separate post has been written covering what’s accepted, how to efficiently load and fill a dumpster, and what requires alternative disposal. It’s worth reviewing before loading begins to avoid any complications at pickup.
Common Mistakes Worth Avoiding
Underestimating the project. Projects regularly generate more waste than expected. A kitchen remodel, for instance, often involves not just cabinets and countertops but also drywall, flooring, and plumbing fixtures. A conservative estimate tends to cost more in the end.
Ignoring weight. Volume and weight are assessed separately. A smaller container filled with tile or brick can exceed its weight limit faster than expected.
Not accounting for placement. A container that’s dropped in the wrong spot can block access, damage a surface, or violate local code. The placement location should be agreed upon before the truck arrives.
